Updraft People In A Downdraft World

This signature talk leverages the analogy that when geese fly in a V formation they fly 71% further. Five core principles emerge from this analogy and speak directly to the heart of individual and group peak performance!

**These 5 pillars of leader effectiveness and outstanding teamwork can be presented as a whole or as stand-alone topics.

PERSONAL MANAGEMENT: Updraft People manage themselves and influence others in a way that increases their desire to cooperate. No matter how we try to adress it up our inability to manage our inner game leaks out and people are repelled from us instead of being drawn to us in cooperation. Like the goose that flies in the V because of something internal, so we too behave the way we do because of our internal compass. As Jim Rohn says, In order to be successful in business, we need to work on ourselves at least as hard as we work on our business.

DIRECTIONAL ENCOURAGEMENT: Increase the performance of others rapidly without sacrificing morale. Too often we attempt to improve the performance of others by pointing out all of the areas that are wrong. Temporary improvements are purchased with long-term resentment…its a bad deal! Just as the geese honk consistent encouragement for the long flight, so too can we increase our vision of what people are doing right and reference it in such a way that they know exactly how improve and will actually enjoy doing it!

APPROPRIATE FEEDBACK: Correct behavior in a timely effective way without crushing the spirit. Whether given to a peer, a direct report, or even a supervisor, corrective feedback can be given clearly and effectively without all of the mental and emotional add-ons that get us sideways with people. Just as the wind provides immediate, consistent, persistent and impartial pressure on the goose out of formation, we can learn to be as effective in helping to keep those we care about in the 71% Advantage.

SHARED RESPONSIBILITY: Avoid burnout of the few and stagnation of the rest through rotational leadership. Its lonely at the top, a familiar expression, addresses the reality that organizations deal with. The reality is however, that its lonely in the middle and at the bottom as well. Sometimes its a lack of initiative and at other times, a lack of opportunity. Whatever the cause, it becomes an every man for himself experience and it is not enjoyable or effective to increase productivity and profit. The strength and endurance of the geese lies in the reality that all of the geese take their turn in front, pushing against the wind.

PROBLEM SOLVING: Resolve conflicts and solve problems while building team loyalty and ingenuity. Successful organizations are not characterized by having the least amount of problems or conflict. Quite to the contrary: the best organizations in the world have a lot of problems as well as conflict. Those organizations have learned well how to use their problems or conflict as a growth tool. When a goose has a problem and if forced to land, support geese go with it and stay until the problem is resolved. Organizations and individuals are standing on the most fertile soil for growth when they encounter another person or group in a problem or conflict. How we respond reveals a great deal about how we manage our inner game.

Embracing Change
This session clearly explains the internal process that we all must go through if we are to experience the benefits and lessons of change. Participants will clearly understand where they are in the change process, what holds them back and how to take the next step. Resistance to change will drop and the desire to embrace it will rise.
This topic can also focus on organizational change, in particular how to manage the threat experienced by those who are being asked to change. A three step process is essential to ensure the change process doesnt end up on a dead-end street. Current research and relevant case studies are delivered in a clear presentation with options for group interaction and facilitation.
Leaving Your Mark
This session takes a humorous and tender look at the process of living a life of maximum impact that creates a lasting legacy. It takes a look at the difference between success and significance and challenges participants to be fully present and live in a way that maximizes every moment. The lessons, if applied, will call forth the very best in each person, resulting in laser focus and commitment to the most important tasks at hand.
